Gypsy@Rawai has planted a Water Buffalo.

Thats right we have got a Water Buffalo to bring us fortune and luck. After getting an old cart, I thought a Water Buffalo would fit just right to set the atmosphere of truely being on a hoilday on the resort island of Phuket. Nice for a photo shoot! Perhaps. But let me tell you June thinks otherwise, my misfortune!

The Thais love their Water Buffalo or Kwai to no end. There is not much left for them to do as modern day machines have taken over their jobs. Nevertheless owning a Water Buffalo is prestiges in Thai society even today. But never make a mistake to call a Thai Kwai, as it signify that the person is stupid.

Why did we have  a Buffalo here in the first place. Most important, we had the space. We had greenery to plant our cart and fit the Kwai. Now after installing these, I feel its a brillant spark of an idea. The more i admire the animal, the more it inspires me to work hard at my goals here at Gypsy@Rawai. Serving good food and the best service all times will ensure success in the long run. Just like the Kwai, the beast dont see instant results, or probably its not even looking for results but just doing what it made to do. We are doing exactly the same but with a difference, we expect to be rewarded handsomely unlike the Kwai.

Progress to enhance your meal at Gypsy@Rawai

Gypsy@Rawai believes that the feast starts with your senses. Here we are always trying to see and experiment new ideas to see how we can play to make dining here truly a feast. We have installed air conditioning and that has been a very popular dining area.

This week we have finally got our sign board. The graphic designers really take a long time to sort this out. I would prefer acrylic instead of canvas. The acrylic last long but the canvas has to be changed every 3 years. Guess what, June decided canvas!

The floor below our dining, the garden wall were so bare. Most guest would have to go there to use the wash room. I wanted something that would make people look at the wall. After much pondering and window shopping, looking at the photos that that i had taken and finally short listed this .

June wanted to entice people to walk into so she decided that a welcome drink or popular dishes banner would be perfect. But my biggest worry doing all these banners was that i had to be very careful as the graphic designer was not very good in english. There re a few drafts that had spelling errors.  My thoughts is that she had done a perfect job.

There are more ideas flowing in. And they are in the pipe line. We are busy. But really for the both of us, we find it so satisfying and enjoyable. We are just doing what we like anf restricted to some designers. Is that not what is life all about. To creat and enjoy your self. We are kids again!

But kids need food and last night this was our dinner Kaw Klook Kapi. It cost only 150 Bahts at Gypsy@Rawai.

Mango Salad

Why Gypsy@Rawai serve the best Thai Salad

We will just leave all salads alone and just focus on the best Thai Salad. The Mango Salad and the Papaya Salad. And how we manage to serve both of them very deliciously.

The Manago Salad is served with cashew nuts while the Papaya Salad is served with ground nuts.  As usual if you are in Thailand you must be very careful and when ordering to state the spicy level that you can handle. Otherwise they will assume that you can just like them. I feel sorry for you if that happen. Here at Gypsy@Rawai, we always ask how spicy you would like.

That aside the Thais love their MSG. So you must love it too. But here at Gypsy@Rawai we avoid this stuff. For me personally , this is a silent killer. Before i get side track bout the MSG, let me continue about our discussion, our Mango Salad and the Papaya Salad. Both the Mango and Papaya  are carefully choosen by our chef daily. This ensiure that they are fresh and crispy. And the the other stuff that they put in are also fresh. Really what are the special ingredients that they put in will always be a secret as we do not want other restaurants to copy us.

Just had lunch with June. I always leave her to decide  what is going to be served on the table. I like surprises. This way life becomes more exciting and challenging as you have to eat even if you dont like 🙂 But more important this makes her happy and she thinks she in charge, haha. She really thinks that and at the moment she is happy with this arrangement. More important, this keeps me away from this mundane task.

This is an old habit and it goes way back when my mom was alife. I never used to call to check the menu or to know what was the plan for the evening menu. I would just grab what was available.

Eating at the our new premises is really so pleasing. We now sit in the air conditioning area. Today was a bit more special as the kids are at school. So just the 2 of us. How romantic! Next we really can feel the difference as we are no longer at the fish market. So the bad smell is no longer an issue. And we do not have people bring in seafood from the market while we are eating. You can imagine while you are eating midway and someone comes with this shopping bag of seafood. Sometimes if you are not so lucky, the seafood is not fresh and you are the innocent reciepient of the bad odor. Nothing strange about this. As most people cant tell the difference. They really cannot tell and they innocently accept the gosapal truth from the fish mongor the seafood is fresh. My heart cries for them.

June loves the Morning Glory served at the Gypsy@Rawai.  She orde a large serving of Morning Glory with Oyster Sauce  with a couple of red chillies. It was nice, crunchy and juicy. Spicy fried rice with chicken, was excellent but if it was a bit more spicy would have brought a smile on my face. And squid stir fried with spring onion was excellent. The squid was very tender and nice. Its was delicious. And i was so happy as it was a simple meal. I am glad i have June.

Gypsy@Rawai boast a very matured garden as a bonus to delicious food

We are very fortunate to be able to share our new premises with you. The design and the matured garden is just beyond this world for me atleast. There are lots of flowers and beautiful trees. The previous owners must have painstakingly loved this place so much that he has invested so much of time to choose the flowers and the plants that he wanted around him. We lots of birds visiting us in the afternoons. And the sounds of the birds chipping away, just makes it a pleasant afternoon.

Obviously, unless some great and tasy food is added to this will be great. I have decided to add a Pineapple Fried Rice, as a stand alone for this.

A big NO to MSG at Gypsy@Rawai

We will continue with our on going programe NOT to serve MSG here at Gypsy @Rawai. This was a decision we made when we first ventured into the restaurant business. Its no mistake. Diners were so glad that we have taken this silent killer from our menu. But really what is MSG?

For me it made me thirsty, if i do not consume enough fluid, i would have a hangover. Can you beat that no alcohol and i have a hangover! For my customers feedback, it really made no difference if MGD was added. They could not tell and they felt no difference in the taste of the food.  The food tasted very delicious. So inclusion, there was no necessity to add any MSG in the food.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given MSG its generally recognized as safe (GRAS) designation. A popular belief in the Anglosphere, known as “Chinese restaurant syndrome”, is that large doses of MSG can cause headaches and other feelings of discomfort, but scientists have been unable to trigger such reactions in controlled studies.[Gov. 2] The European Union classifies it as a food additive permitted in certain foods and subject to quantitative limits. MSG has the HS code 29224220 and the E number E621.[Gov. 3]

So now it boils down to why do they add and here is Thailand they  add even more. Than necessary. For me and my interrecation and interviews with chefs is that they lack confidence and they feel the food that they prepared is not delicious enough. They have no concern about your health. Probably that is the least of their concern.unfortunately but its true.

So what if the food is not delicious, we here at Gypsy@Rawai think otherwise.

Say cheers!
